A silent retreat is an opportunity to deeply re-set, connect inwards, and to stay a while with your own experience. Friends, this is the dream trip. Can I introduce you to the concept of dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing — an Italian phrase describing a relaxed, carefree idleness; to be without hurry.

There is plenty to do on this retreat, but it’s all centered around a deep savoring, an un-hurriedness. The way we sit down to delicious meals together will be the way we step onto our mats, will be the way we remember to live each day; savoring deeply. Being satiated with what Life serves up.

As many of you know, 2022 was a year for us. And when I sat at the edge of the ultimate loss, I remember reflecting on things and thinking “I don’t have regrets. I said YES to life, I did my best for me and my family, to live what has been thrown my way as fully as I can”

The Region:

Our villa is situated in the luscious natural landscape of Southeastern Sicily. The villa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, set amongst olive and almond groves, and minutes from beautiful beaches and historical sites including the World Heritage site of Noto, Siracusa, Modica, Scicli and Ibia.

A 15 minute drive east is the Nature Reserve of Vendicari, a haven of wildlife and some of the island’s most beautiful and deserted golden-sand beaches.

The villa is a one-hour drive south from Catania airport, on the island’s east coast. We recommend hiring cars from the airport. Alternately, we can arrange transport for you from the airport.

The Retreat Centre:

La Masseria is a private, beautifully restored 19th century farmhouse villa situated in the luscious natural landscape of Southeastern Sicily. The villa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, set amongst olive and almond groves, and minutes from beautiful beaches and historical sites.

The center includes a fresh water infinity pool, loads of different patios and living spaces, spaces to eat or simply relax, two massage rooms and a stunning sunset terrace.

The yoga studio is a beautifully restored pitched roof barn, fully equipped with all props, with an outdoor wooden shala overlooking the orange garden.

Free time can be used to walk through plantations of almonds, olives and watermelons fields or cycle on trails amongst the groves.

Treat yourself to a massage, swim in the freshwater infinity pool, enjoy the wonderful beaches or Sicilian historical towns nearby.

Yoga will be both Yin and some Yang to keep the body stimulated and in balance. Our dharma talks will deeply explore the teaching Buddhism, the dharma, the practices of mindfulness, and their application to our daily lives, in a way that is not possible in any other format where the mind is still engaged in social interaction and maximum sensory input. We will peel back the layers of our own habits, mechanisms of mind, holdings and unresolved healings, in order to deeply digest that which still needs processing. The schedule is designed to be quite full, to give a strong backbone to the experience so that you do not have to wonder about where to go or what to do next, but can instead drop that part of your brain that weighs options, decides, and schedules your time.

There will also be an opportunity for a 1:1 check-in. This is not mandatory, but on offer if it will support your experience. As we are able to dive so much deeper to the heart of things on silent retreat than in any other workshop, training or retreat that I have offered before, I welcome the opportunity to answer your questions, help navigate struggles, or otherwise support your experience through the retreat in these 1:1s.

We will arrive on Thursday, Feb 22nd. Check-in is between 4-6pm. We will have dinner and orientation Thursday night. You will have the chance to settle in, meet others, and negotiate shared room/shared bathroom logistics if relevant. We will have an orientation, question and answer period, and meditation practice after dinner. We will drop into silence after the practice. While I will be speaking, of course, to guide our practice, dharma talks, and coordinate, we ask that you hold noble silence in the common spaces, and in your private or shared rooms as well.

This is also an opportunity to take a journey away from one’s daily responsibilities, preoccupations and worldly events. With this in mind, we require everyone to turn off their computers and phones for the duration of the retreat in order to genuinely connect with oneself in a less distracted inner and outer environment. This will undoubtedly deepen everyone’s experience. We feel unplugging from technology in retreat life is essential and will benefit all the attendees. There will be an emergency contact provided for students to give loved ones.

Gourmet vegetarian meals are served daily, using high-protein Andean grains and legumes, as well as freshly-harvested organic vegetables from Willka T’ika gardens. The exotic fusion of Andean and international flavors in the colorful buffet breakfast and hearty three-course dinner ensure that every guest feels nourished and cared for. Special diet requests are accommodated, such as dairy/gluten free.

While this retreat is a chance to see an unforgettable corner of the globe, it offers the opportunity for great insight. Our luxurious and charming retreat centre with its intimate, boutique feel, can be your haven for 5 days of wellness activities. On this retreat, we meet in Lisbon at our lovely 4 star hotel, and you'll have time to explore the city for the day, and we highly recommend coming a few days early to tour around and adjust to the time change. In Lisbon we will supply you with a list of some of our very favorite spots; lots of recommendations for things to do, places to eat, etc. The following morning we'll drive down the coast to settle in to our new home-away-from-home, perched on one of the picturesque cliff sides facing southern seas.

At the villa you are encouraged to make yourself at home. All of our basic needs will be taken care of by our hosts and an incredible private chef. The villa itself is a magical place to relax and unwind. There's a pool, a yoga area, and balconies that overlook the ocean and cliffs. There will be designated quiet areas for those looking to retreat in a bit, to meditate or read. A beautiful beach is a 10 minute walk away. 

We'll practice daily once we settle into the villa: A full practice of meditation followed by Vinyasa in the mornings to clear our minds, energize our bodies, and set the day. We'll have a full Yin Yoga practice each evening to restore us from the day's events and allow us to reset for the next day. Throughout the week we'll hold a few workshops breaking down aspects of the practice for those that want to dig deeper into challenging postures, Yoga Nidra, or Buddhist philosophy. 

Three of the 5 days in the Algarve will be surf days. You can opt out, or just come along for the beach, but the surfing costs are included in the retreat for those that want to participate. We'll drive out to wherever the best break is. Those wanting lessons can participate in and hour and a half lesson in the morning, and and hour and a half again in the afternoon. 

You do not have to have prior experience in surfing, or yoga for that matter, but you have to be up for the adventure. I myself am new to surfing, and promise to provide many laughs for you with my spectacular attempts to stand up on a board. By the end of the week I'm sure we'll all be championship quality surfers though, no worries. Our meals will be healthy, organic (whenever possible) and locally sourced.

We will leave the villa early on the last day to visit the magical city of Sintra with it's abundance of palaces and castles to explore. We'll settle into our hotel in Lisbon for one more night before retreat-end.
